WA and Nicheliving and Otoc Vault Racing Teams are well represented at the 2016 Omnium Championships in Adelaide this week with Elissa Wundersitz (Open Women), Jade Haines (u/19 Women), Niken Jefferies (u/19 Women) and Craig Wiggins (u/19 Men) all competing for a national title. Both Craig and Jade have just moved up into this category from U17’s.

It is very hot and humid conditions in Adelaide and inside the temperature was 36C with humidity sitting at around 55 per cent making it tough conditions for all athletes.

The first day of the Ominium Nationals was fantastic and the WA team did us proud, reports WAIS Team Manager Caroline Haines from Adelaide.

The scratch races where first up with Jade and Niken racing a fantastic race having their fair share of time and speed on the front.

With one and a half laps to go Jade came up around the bend high on the bank of the track and accelerated to the front of the pack with Niken in hot pursuit.

Jade put about 35m on the pack and won the race with Niken in second place.

Then followed the Individual Pursuit in the afternoon followed by the Elimination race which consists of 2000m for the U19 Women, 3000m for the U19 Men and 3000m for the Open Women events. .

As Jade and Niken had done so well in the morning session they went off last. There are some strong competitors – three who went to Junior Worlds in August this year. Jade ran a 2.27.6 placing her 2nd and Niken ran a 2.33.9 placing her 10th.

Craig was in the 3rd heat running a 3.38.275 which placed him 22nd. Elissa placed 2nd with a 3.50.618.
Afternoon we had Eliminations with Niken and Jade racing first doing a stellar job holding off some extremely strong athletes placing 4th and 5th respectively.  Craig has extremely tough competition. He raced a fantastic race placing 11th.

Next was Elissa in the Open Women’s Elimination which again has a small but strong field. She rode a fantastic race placing 3rd.
